2016 Txakoli Gorabie, Bodegas Astobiza

2016 Txakoli Gorabie, Bodegas Astobiza
ref. ARAB160 JUL17

Wine Variety: Hondarribi Zuri is a local name for one of three different varieties, thus:
Courbu Blanc - Another tangled web here. Courbu Blanc originated in the south of France, but a number of varieties here go by the name Courbu. And it appears in both French and Spanish Basque country, in the latter by the name of Hondarribi Zuri. To add a further dash of mystery, there appear to be two other grapes going by the name Hondarribi Zuri in Basque Spain: Crouchen and an odd US hybrid by the name of Noah. Courbu Blanc is unrelated to Courbu Noir and Petit Courbu.
Crouchen - A white grape from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques also found in Basque Spain where it is called Hondarribi Zuri, a name also given to Courbu Blanc here. It was introduced to South Africa in the 17th century where it is called Cape Riesling.
Noah - A US hybrid grape.
This wine is made from one of these... No-one really knows which but Courbu Blanc seems the most likely contender!

Wine Region: Pais Vasco - the Spanish name for that country's Basque region - is an industrial, highly populated coastal region on the Bay of Biscay. Having its own language and culture it is proudly autonomous. One part of the Rioja DO - Alavesa - lies in the Pais Vasco.

Wine Producer: Bodegas Astobiza is focused on producing Txacoli that expresses its environment and the local grapes. They are transforming the style of Txacoli from the foaming, water-white traditional wine of the region into something rather more serious.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Initially tasted at 14.8 degrees C. There’s positive colour here: a pale straw, with occasional bubbles not so much rising as simply hanging about. Nose is quite hard to define; it’s not exactly an aromatic wine. I find some dried oyster shells, hints of spice and dried flowers and perhaps something riper: small oranges, perhaps. There’s certainly a touch of spritz about the palate. Nuttiness meets the drinker. Apples, too. There’s good weight and density to the palate that gathers, over time, a touch of pithy and refreshing bitterness. And there’s firmness at the core. There’s very good length here, through which a suggestion of something saline runs. Acidity is a lemon zip. There’s the texture of fine silt towards the back. Long and easy and a properly refreshing drink.
