2015 Maturana Blanca, Nivarius

2015 Maturana Blanca, Nivarius
ref. NIVA150 OCT17

Wine Variety: An enticingly little-understood variety, what is certain is that Maturana Blanca was the first recognised grape of Rioja, mentioned in text in 1622 under the name Ribadavia. In 2008 there were but 7 acres of Maturana remaining in Spain (and therefore, one suspects, the world) but since 1995 efforts have been made to increase its plantings.

Wine Region: This is from Rioja in northern Spain, the country's foremost producer of fine wine, by far the majority of which is red. Rioja's fame stems from the time of disease in the French vineyards when wine makers from France headed south to source wines and vineyards to service their thirsty markets.

Wine Producer: Nivarius are on a mission, that mission to produce only white wines of high quality from what is traditionally thought of as being very much a red wine producing region. The name Nivarius refers to the snow drifts they experience in the 800 metre high vineyards in the winter time. The producer's belief is that "Acidity in a white wine is the characteristic that speaks most to its quality" and we couldn't agree more!

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

A rather gorgeous wine in the glass: a pretty, pale green-inflected yellow colour. The nose, whilst not roaring out of the glass, is nevertheless dense with aromatic interest. I could find rich citrus aromas redolent of lemon and grapefruit, as well as a twist of fresh herbs. Taking a sip is something of a wow moment. This hits the tongue and its energy is pretty explosive. There’s a really good weight of fruit expressing the same citrus fruits I found on the nose, plus a cut green apple flavour that becomes distinctly saline. Lots of vim and life here. And length, too. It’s a fascinating white and I am looking forward to trying it with a range of different dishes.
