2016 Soave, Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe

2016 Soave, Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe
ref. GIAC160 FEB18

Wine Variety: What happens to a variety over time is that it spreads and reproduces. The fact that this variety (using assorted pseudonyms) appears as far afield as Sicily and Catalunya suggests that this is, indeed, an ancient vine. Garganega's home is very much in the Veneto these days, where it is the backbone of Soave and a number of other white DOCs. It is capable of producing exceptionally fine and age-worthy wines.

Wine Region: The Veneto lies around the city of Venice; it stretches up to the Austrian border and west to Lake Garda. Some pretty dodgy soils have been permitted DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status: low-lying arable fields used for cereal production before the war. Thus there is a great deal of average wine produced here that qualifies for rather grander status than it deserves. However, the wines of Valpolicella and Soave - where the vineyards are planted on the right slopes - can offer real interest.

Wine Producer: In 1934 Augusto Dal Cero purchased land in Verona on two long-extinct volcanoes. After the war, he cleared the land, planted grapes and founded Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe. In the 1980s Augusto's sons purchased an estate in Tuscany and, more recently, have expanded into Valpolicella.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Aromas here are lovely, of ripe orchard fruits. There's a wisp of smoke to the scents of pears and their skins and there's a scrunch of green herbs. This goes in the mouth pure and nicely ripe, but quickly turns fresh with rhubarb acidity. The second half is a whip: long and very fresh and nicely dense, with great cut and panache.
