2017 Olaszrizling, Gere

2017 Olaszrizling, Gere
ref. GERE170 MAR18

Wine Variety: Olaszrizling is an old variety and one widely spread throughout central Europe and as far as Spain. Common synonyms suggest a (fallacious) relationship with Riesling. Its origins are thought to be either Croatia or the Danubian basin.

Wine Region: Villany is a wine-producing region in the south of Hungary and one that has a very long history of wine production stretching back to the Roman Empire.

Wine Producer: After seven generations of wine making the Gere winery now extends to 70 hectares. In 1992 a JV between Gere and famous Austrian producer Weninger was launched which has added 10 hectares to the operation. Vineyards are planted on a limestone base and the climate here is Continental/Mediterranean with a long growing season.

wine tasting notesTasting Notes:

Very pale: the merest hint of straw tinge. The nose has lots of character. I can find crisp citrus aromas that include grapefruit, as well as a mild melon scent, the whole thing dotted with spice. There’s the merest wisp of rhubarb to the aromas. The palate is a firm thing, fresh and nicely weighted. There’s a touch of grapefruit pith bitterness that ramps up the refreshment yet further. There’s a degree of spice right through this. It’s nicely long, too, with really spicy follow-through. Nice, grapy wine, clean and expressive.

#3wordtastingnote: refreshing, spicy, clean
